Sometimes travel doesn’t go according to plan… and that’s exactly how we ended up in the Cayman Islands instead of Ireland.
Originally, we had flights booked to Ireland, but a volcano eruption completely shut down air travel. With vacation days already set and daycare arrangements made, we had to pivot fast. The solution? A last-minute decision to head south to the Caribbean instead.
Even though everything was booked on short notice, it turned out to be one of the most unexpectedly relaxing trips we’ve ever taken.
A Different Kind of “Vacation Planning”
Since our trip was so last-minute, we weren’t on the tourist-packed side of the island. Instead, we stayed on the residential side, which made the experience feel slower, quieter, and more authentic.
We could wander the streets, pop into local spots, and truly feel like we were living there for a week instead of just visiting. It’s amazing how a last-minute change can turn into a hidden gem of an experience.
Beach Days, Books, and Sunshine
I attempted to try scuba diving, starting with the pool to get used to the oxygen tank. Let’s just say… it didn’t go as planned. Rather than forcing it, I opted to stay back on the beach, reading my book under the sun while soaking in the turquoise water views.
Sometimes, the best memories come from simply slowing down and enjoying the surroundings you didn’t expect to be in.
Swimming With Stingrays
One highlight I won’t forget: we got to swim with the stingrays. The experience was magical—gentle, graceful creatures gliding around us in the shallow, clear water. It felt surreal, like stepping into a nature documentary.
This trip was back in 2010, long before taking phones in the water was a thing. I actually took photos with an underwater camera, but somehow over the years those images got lost. Even without pictures, I’ll never forget the moment of gliding through the clear Caribbean water alongside these graceful creatures.
Even with the last-minute booking chaos, these moments reminded us why travel is about the unexpected adventures, not just the itinerary.
Why I’ll Always Remember This Trip
- A volcanic eruption rerouted our plans, but we ended up somewhere even more serene.
- Last-minute travel pushed us to explore areas we wouldn’t have seen otherwise.
- Relaxing on the beach with a book turned out to be just as memorable as any activity we had planned.
- Swimming with stingrays became a highlight that I’ll tell people about for years.
Sometimes, the best trips are the ones that weren’t planned at all.
